A court in Ecuador has convicted a man of the shooting of a Japanese honeymooning couple in the country in 2013 that left the husband dead and his wife seriously injured, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Carlos Camposano could face a prison term of between 16 and 30 years for the crime, a murder-robbery, they said.

Tetsuo and Mariko Hitomi were assaulted in a taxi they took in front of a luxury hotel in the city of Guayaquil on Dec. 28, 2013.

The defense counsel had sought Camposano's acquittal, arguing a lack of evidence, but the court ruled against him on accounts given by the wife and witnesses. He is expected to appeal the ruling.

Camposano was arrested in July last year. His trial began on Monday following a preliminary inquiry and indictment.
