A new wholesale market will open in early November 2016 in Tokyo's Toyosu district to replace the storied Tsukiji fish market, the construction committee decided Wednesday.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government aims to complete the construction of the new market by March 2016 as Tsukiji, the biggest wholesale fish and seafood market in the world, which the metropolitan government claim is aging and outgrowing its present premises.

The new market will cover about 40 hectares and include structures to sell fish, fruit and vegetables, as well as restaurants for tourists.

The Tsukiji market was built in 1935 and its tuna auctions have been a major tourist attraction for years.
