Japan was the favorite travel destination for Taiwanese women in August, according to statistics released by the island's Tourism Bureau.

Over 121,000 Taiwanese women visited Japan in August, nearly 15,000 more than those who went to mainland China, the second favorite destination, data released Wednesday showed.

The number of Taiwanese women who visit Japan in August has been fluctuating ever since President Ma Ying-jeou was first elected in 2008.

In August 2008, around 63,000 visited Japan, increasing to 75,000 in August 2009. It then dropped in 2010 and 2011, until it picked up again in August last year with 77,000 Taiwanese women visiting Japan.
