One person is missing after an avalanche hit a group of climbers on Mount Shirouma in Nagano Prefecture on Saturday, police said.

The missing climber is believed to be a woman in her 50s from Gifu Prefecture, they said.

Of the group of six, the woman and three other climbers were struck by the avalanche at around 10:35 a.m. Saturday The three other members were rescued after the group leader made an emergency call to the police around noon.

The police are checking if any other climbers are missing on the mountain, as they have yet to confirm the safety of eight people in two groups who were near the site of the avalanche.
