The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will hold its 38th general meeting, and first in Japan, in Yokohama in March 2014, the Environment Ministry said Wednesday.
An organization of global warming researchers, the IPCC won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize.
The panel is working on its fifth global warming assessment report for release by October 2014. Governments use the report to form global warming policies and for international negotiations.
The meeting in Yokohama will approve and announce the Working Party II's report on global warming's impact on society and nature after the working party's March 25-29 session in the city.
Some 500 people are expected to participate in the Yokohama meeting, including government representatives as well as researchers producing the report.
"It will be very significant that the IPCC general meeting to gather the latest findings on climate change in the world will take place in Japan for the first time," Yokohama Mayor Fumiko Hayashi said in a statement.
