‘Wild, daro?’ tops buzzword list for 2012

“Wild, daro?” (“I’m wild, right?”), the signature phrase of comedian Sugi-chan, has been selected Japan’s top buzzword of the year, the organizer of the award said Monday.

The top 10 Japanese words and phrases that best define 2012 also included “shukatsu” (preparation for one’s death) and “Tokyo Solamachi” (the shopping mall at Tokyo Skytree).

The top 10 words chosen from the political world were “ishin” (restoration) as used in Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Restoration Party), “chikai uchi ni” (sometime soon) Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s promise for the timing of the Lower House election, and “dai sankyoku” (the third force), referring to the new force challenging the status quo of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan and the Liberal Democratic Party.

The list also included “iPS saibo” (stem cells), for which researcher Shinya Yamanaka won this year’s Nobel Prize in medicine.
