Territorial dispute casts shadow on friendship events

The territorial row over the Senkaku Islands is casting a new shadow over bilateral friendship events. Okinawa Prefecture and China’s Fujian Province have postponed an exchange event, prefectural officials said Wednesday, apparently in reaction to anti-Japanese demonstrations in China over the weekend.

The dispute has intensified since activists from Hong Kong and local politicians in Japan landed in recent days on Uotsuri, the largest of the islets in the Senkaku group.

In Okayama Prefecture, meanwhile, a citizens’ group in Tamano said it canceled a trip to Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province, scheduled for early October to promote friendship between the two cities.
