A station on the Tobu Isesaki Line was renamed Tokyo Sky Tree Station on Saturday, as it is the nearest rail stop to the world's tallest tower.
The former Narihirabashi Station in Sumida Ward, operated by Tobu Railway Co., is undergoing major renovation work in anticipation of a surge in passengers heading to and from Tokyo's newest tourist attraction, which is set to open to the public May 22.
The work includes adding more ticket gates and stairways, and expanding the concourse. It is scheduled for completion by April 20. The station's signs were replaced before the day's train services began, but the old name was included at the request of local residents.
The railway also renamed the line's section between Tobu-Dobutsu-Koen Station in Saitama Prefecture and its Tokyo terminals, Asakusa and Oshiage, as the Tobu Sky Tree Line.
