GENEVA – A U.N. panel on racial discrimination has sent a letter to the government asking about the current situation and Japan’s position on relocating the Futenma military base within Okinawa, Japanese officials based in Geneva said Tuesday.
The letter concerns an appeal by nongovernmental organizations to the U.N. Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the officials said. The NGOs have said the plan constitutes a human rights violation.
