NAHA, OKINAWA PREF. – Okinawa Gov. Hirokazu Nakaima has submitted to the Defense Ministry’s Okinawa bureau his opinion on the relocation of the Futenma base within the prefecture, saying it would be “impossible” to protect the environment around the envisaged site under the current plan.
The opinion, submitted Monday, is Okinawa’s response to the environmental impact assessment submitted by the Defense Ministry in December regarding the planned construction of an airfield in the less populated coastal area of Henoko in Nago. The Futenma base is currently located in a crowded part of Ginowan.
