The government will host a meeting on U.N. Security Council reform in Tokyo next Monday as part of efforts to include Japan as a permanent member, Japanese Ambassador to the United Nations Tsuneo Nishida said.

"Our aim is to open a new chapter for an honest, open and substantive dialogue, which is essential to explore achievable reform," Nishida told U.N. member states Tuesday at a General Assembly debate on the "question of equitable representation on and increase in the membership of the Security Council."

Nishida was referring to ongoing debate about expanding the council that has divided nations. While most agree that the powerful council needs to be reformed to better reflect the reality of the 21st century, there are widely differing views on how to do so.
