NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Friday its group net profit in the April-December period rose 5.9 percent from a year earlier to ¥443.98 billion, boosted by revenue from packet data communication services.

The nation's largest mobile phone operator said revenues from its handset insurance program contributed to the increase, while noting that price cuts on handsets led to an overall drop in sales revenue.

The company said operating revenue in the nine-month period declined 1.0 percent to ¥3.21 trillion, while group operating profit grew 7.9 percent to ¥758.50 billion due to a cut in networking costs and other streamlining efforts.

For the full business year through March, the company retained its forecast for consolidated sales of ¥4.21 trillion, down 1.8 percent from the previous year.
