SHANGHAI (Kyodo) Toyota Motor Corp. will recall four models covering 690,000 cars produced in China due to problems with an electric window switch, company officials said Monday.

It will be the biggest car recall China has ever seen, Chinese media reported. Toyota will start replacing the problem parts Tuesday for free.

The affected models including the Camry, Corolla, Yaris and Vios manufactured by a local joint venture between May 2006 and the end of 2008, the officials said.

The defects could cause the switches to catch fire.

According to local media, some owners of the cars reported glitches when opening and closing the driver's side window. Toyota subsequently found that parts inside the window switches could cause part of the interior furnishing to melt, produce smoke or even catch fire.

Toyota recalled about 260,000 Chinese-made Camrys in April over a brake problem.
