Barneys Japan Co. is considering opening an outlet of the Barneys New York department store in Fukuoka in a few years' time, sources familiar with the matter said Saturday.

The new outlet of the upscale department store will use floor space rented in a commercial building in the Tenjin shopping and entertainment district, the sources said.

Barneys Japan is looking to draw shoppers from a wide range of areas on Kyushu because the Kagoshima route for the Kyushu Shinkansen Line will be completed in 2011, connecting Kagoshima, its southernmost major city, with Fukuoka in the north, they said.

Barneys Japan operates three stores in Tokyo's Ginza and Shinjuku shopping districts and in Yokohama under a license from Barneys New York Inc.
