CHIBA (Kyodo) The Chiba Prefectural Government on Thursday told a company that imports live eel from China to recall about 1,500 kg of the fish because they contain triple the allowable level of the organochlorine pesticide dicofol, local officials said.

The importer, Marukatsu, based in Narita, Chiba Prefecture, sold the eel to wholesale distributors in Tokyo, Saitama and Chiba prefectures, but no reports of illness have been reported so far, the officials said.

The eel were imported from Fujian Province on Jan. 3, and the quarantine station at Narita airport detected the excessive dicofol in them during a random inspection, they said.
