Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said Saturday that his country will back Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council regardless of whether Japan gives aid to the landlocked African country.

"We support Japan entering the Security Council on principle, not because of aid," Museveni said in an interview in Yokohama.

"Even if they didn't aid us, we would support them because they are a major power in Asia and in the world," Museveni said. "The Japanese economy is the second-biggest in the world so we don't see why they should not be in the Security Council."
