Honda Motor Co. has redesigned the Fit compact, its best-selling domestic model, for the first time in six years to compete against Toyota Motor Corp.’s Vitz and Mazda Motor Corp.’s Demio for a bigger share of the shrinking Japanese car market.

Honda plans to sell 12,000 Fits a month. The car, powered by a 1.3- or 1.5-liter engine, goes on sale Oct. 26 and is priced between ¥1.2 million and ¥1.8 million, the Tokyo-based company said Thursday.
