Nintendo Co.'s Wii game console extended its sales lead over Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 in Japan last month, research firm Enterbrain Inc. said Monday.

Nintendo, the world's third-biggest maker of video-game players, sold 270,974 Wii consoles in June, more than six times the 41,628 PS3 machines sold, Tokyo-based Enterbrain said, while Microsoft Corp. posted sales of 17,616 Xbox 360 players.

A motion-sensitive controller used with the Wii that allows players to thrust a sword or swing a tennis racket on-screen has helped Kyoto-based Nintendo sell 2.76 million units since its Dec. 2 Japan debut.

That's almost three times more than the 970,270 PS3s sold since its Nov. 11 Japan introduction.

Wii sales were boosted by such titles as "Wii Sports" and "Biohazard 4," better known in the U.S. as the "Resident Evil" series. The two games made the top 10 best-selling games in Japan in June, Enterbrain said.

The Wii has widened its sales lead over the PS3 since March, according to Enterbrain figures.

In May, it outsold the PS3 by more than five to one, and four to one in April. The PS3 retails for at least 50,000 yen in Japan, double the price of the Wii.
