Sony Corp. said Wednesday its semiconductor arm will expand production of parts for digital cameras and mobile phones equipped with cameras amid growing global demand.

The consumer electronics giant plans to invest about 60 billion yen over the next three years, and Sony Semiconductor Kyushu Corp., based in Fukuoka, will raise the capacity at its Kumamoto Technology Center by around 20 percent starting early next year.

The move is mainly aimed at increasing production of key components for digital cameras — complementary metal-oxide semiconductors (CMOS) and charge-coupled devices (CCDs).

Sony has the biggest share of the global CCD market.
