Top Internet portal Yahoo Japan Corp. said Friday some 4,492,200 messages have been erased from its e-mail service as a result of a program glitch.

The lost messages were sent to a total of about 275,500 people, and most of them were e-mails sent in bulk from specific addresses, Yahoo Japan said, adding that the chance of personal messages having been erased was “extremely small.”

In addition, some 5,149,500 messages become temporarily inaccessible.

The affected e-mails were among those sent between Dec. 26 and Feb. 26. Yahoo Japan identified them as spam e-mails but sent them to regular in-boxes as requested by receivers.

In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.
