A 20-year-old male college student was fatally stabbed Monday evening on a street in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto, police said Tuesday.

Daisaku Chiba, a freshman at Kyoto Seika University, was found stabbed in the Iwakura district at around 7:50 p.m. He had been stabbed in the chest, back and stomach some 10 times, police said.

Chiba was still alive when a passerby found him and called an ambulance.

"I have no idea who stabbed me," he was quoted as saying before he died at a nearby hospital.

Police said witnesses saw another man at the scene, and he may have been involved in Chiba's slaying.

According to college officials, Chiba was bicycling to a friend's house after leaving the campus. His wallet and other belongings were not touched, police said.

The crime scene is surrounded by rice paddies and a few houses.

On Tuesday morning, a sign was posted at the university's entrance notifying students of Chiba's death. Students who read the notice said they were shocked by the news.

Chiba, from Sendai, was enrolled in the first "manga department" at a Japanese college, people close to him said.
