Large and powerful Typhoon Chaba hit Kyushu and Shikoku on Monday, leaving five people dead, four missing and more than 70 injured.

It is the sixth typhoon to strike the main Japanese islands so far this year. According to the Meteorological Agency, which began keeping relevant data in 1951, this matches the full-year record set in 1990 and equaled in 1993.

In Miyazaki Prefecture, a 71-year-old man trying to fix a storage roof died after he was blown to the ground by strong winds, while an 82-year-old man attempting to saw a branch off a tree died after a gust of wind whisked him off his ladder, local police said.
