Peru will send a government mission to Japan this week to request that Tokyo extradite former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said Friday.

The delegation, led by Martha Chavarri, vice foreign minister of Asian affairs, will discuss the issue with Japanese officials from the foreign and justice ministries. They will be in Japan from Wednesday through Friday.

"It's very important, because this will be the first opportunity to directly request that the Japanese government extradite Fujimori," Peru's Foreign Minister Manuel Rodriguez was quoted by Lima-based RPP radio as saying.

Peru has been seeking the extradition of Fujimori on a range of charges, including involvement in the murder of 25 civilians in 1991 and 1992 when he was in power. He also faces charges of embezzlement of public funds and dereliction of duty.
