The Shiga Prefectural Government announced Wednesday it will soon stop requiring that foreign applicants seeking to live in public housing units be proficient in Japanese, officials said.

The policy change came after the local government was criticized for refusing applications for public housing from foreigners who do not speak enough Japanese.
