Respondents to a recent Kyodo News survey voiced mixed views over the government's plan to cap its refund guarantee on all deposits at 10 million yen on April 1.

The full implementation of the plan was backed by 23.5 percent of the respondents, while 30.5 percent voiced support for a proposal to exclude deposits for financial settlements from the refund cap.

Some 32.9 percent of respondents called on the government to postpone the imposition of the limit.

Kyodo conducted the phone survey on 1,031 randomly selected voters Saturday and Sunday. Some 31.4 percent of respondents said Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi should stick to his fiscal reform plan by compiling an austere budget for fiscal 2003.

Some 10.5 percent of respondents advocated a generous budget via an increase in government bond issues, while 53.2 percent said they were undecided.
