Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko spent their first full day in Warsaw on Wednesday, attending a luncheon hosted by Prime Minister Leszek Miller and listening to music by Chopin at an outdoor piano recital.

The Imperial Couple, in Poland on a four-day official visit, left the government guest house in Warsaw on Wednesday evening and joined a local crowd for the outdoor concert at Lazienki Park, applauding with the audience at the end of each performance.

Earlier in the day, the Emperor and Empress attended a luncheon at a palace in the Polish capital that was hosted by Miller and his wife, Aleksandra.

The Imperial Couple were escorted in a horse-driven carriage to the Palace on the Water at Lazienki Park and were greeted along the way by many citizens.

Before this, they visited the Polish legislature and met officials there. After lunch, they went to the old city, including quarters that were destroyed by the German Army during World War II but were later restored.

The Imperial Couple are to travel on to Austria on Friday on a four-nation trip that will also include Hungary.

They left Japan Saturday and first visited the Czech Republic before arriving in Poland Tuesday. They are slated to return to Japan on July 20.
