A Japan-South Korea symposium on fishery cooperation held here Wednesday drew about 160 attendants, including local government officials and people from the fishing industry.

The event, hosted by the Japan Regional Fishery Society and a marine business administration society in South Korea and held at Acros Fukuoka, was the second of its kind. The first was held in Pusan, South Korea, in 1999.

At the symposium, Shin Yong Tae, a researcher from the Korea Maritime Institute, delivered a speech on effective management of coastal fisheries in South Korea.

An official with the regional fishery society said, "We researchers can discuss how (the two nations) can preserve resources while fishing appropriate amounts, though it is difficult at the government level."
