An elderly blind couple were rescued Wednesday after tumbling off a subway platform and onto the tracks at a Nagoya subway station, local traffic bureau officials said.

The man, 76, and the woman, 70, whose names have not been released, fell off the platform at Kurokawa station at about 12:20 p.m., they said. The subway is operated by the Nagoya Municipal Government.

Two station officials and several bystanders reached down and pulled the pair back up onto the platform.

The couple were then taken to hospital, officials said.

The officials said the man, who was trying to keep the woman from falling off the platform, eventually lost his balance, sending both tumbling onto the tracks.
