Traffic fatalities this year totaled 2,019 on Saturday, topping the 2,000 mark six days later than last year, the National Police Agency said Monday.
By region, Chiba Prefecture recorded the most traffic fatalities, with 122, followed by Hyogo Prefecture with 102, Saitama Prefecture with 100, Ibaraki Prefecture with 93 and Tokyo with 90, the NPA said.
The figures include only those people who die within 24 hours of being involved in an accident.
