Pitcher Kazuhiro Sasaki, who was recently named the American League's Rookie of the Year, will fund a scholarship for children living in Bangkok's slums for a third consecutive year, it was learned Friday.

The donation will be made through the Tokyo-based Shanti Volunteer Association for about 90 Thai children living in poverty, said association officials, adding that the Sasaki scholarship has helped 204 children in the past two years.

The 32-year-old closer for the Seattle Mariners asked the association not to disclose the amount of the fund, they said.

The scholarship program was started after Sasaki accepted a request from the volunteer group's Bangkok office manager in 1998, according to the SVA.
