Australia's federal election is scheduled for Oct. 3. Australians residing in Japan are eligible to vote in the election if they have registered with the nation's electoral commission.

Although voting is compulsory in Australia, citizens living in Japan do not have to cast ballots. But for those who want to vote, postal ballots have arrived at the Australian Embassy and consulates in Osaka, Nagoya, Sendai, Fukuoka and Sapporo.

Citizens can vote between now and polling day, on which the embassy in Tokyo will be open for direct voting from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call the nearest consulate or embassy at (03) 5232-4057 or (03) 5232-4170.
