Tokyo, Japan, February 27, 2019—The Utilization of Carbon Dioxide Institute Co., Ltd. (UCDI; Head Office: Minato, Tokyo / CEO: Dr. Hideaki Yukawa), a venture of The University of Tokyo, today announced that it obtained a patent on December 21, 2018 for its invention of the world’s first method of producing isobutanol, which is approved as a raw material for bio-jet fuel, using its proprietary UCDI strain of hydrogen bacteria (Patent No. 6450912).
With this patent in hand, UCDI will press forward with technological development to further accelerate the realization of industrial applications.
Patent Number : JP,6450912,B
Title of Invention : Hydrogenophilus bacterium transformant
Application Number : JP2018-541440
Application Date : June 25, 2018
Registration Date : December 21, 2018
UCDI pursues R&D and industrialization efforts that sophisticatedly leverage innovative biotechnologies centered on the high-protein UCDI strain of bacteria, which can multiply from one bacterium to 16 million in 24 hours with CO2 as a raw material. These efforts are aimed at helping to solve global food security challenges and bring about a low-carbon world, through four areas of technology: 1) biofeeds (protein material for feed in aquaculture and livestock), 2) high-performance proteins, 3) bio-jet fuel, and 4) chemicals (e.g., bio-degradable plastics).
