Upscale jazz over dinner and Champagne

There’s never a dull moment in Tokyo with its thriving entertainment scene, reputation as a first-class dining destination and the indulgent combination of both.

On March 10, The Peninsula Tokyo’s bar and grill Peter will harness the best of the two worlds with “Jazz Night at Peter.” The event, supported by Japan’s premier jazz club Blue Note Tokyo, features Juilliard-trained soul chanteuse and Broadway actress Morgan James.

James is poised to deliver two blistering sets of music inspired by classic Motown, soul, jazz and R&B. The Peninsula Tokyo is offering a dinner and show seating, as well as a later, more casual after-dinner affair. Free-flowing Dom Perignon Champagne is available at both sessions.

Attendees of the first seating and show running from 6 to 8 p.m are invited to partake in a four-course dinner (¥29,000 plus tax and service charges) serving Peter’s signature grilled steak and similar fare. The second seating, a post-meal show, runs from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. On offer are tasty canapes (¥16,000 plus tax and service charges) accompanied by the aforementioned Champagne “on tap.”

Discover peace at an alpine getaway

Its location in the heart of the Japanese Alps in Nagano and amid the lush forests and clear streams of the Chubusangaku National Park means Kamikochi Imperial Hotel can only be enjoyed for about half of the year.

The classic, 74-room alpine hotel, its architecture reminiscent of a Swiss mountain lodge, is currently accepting bookings for this year’s season that runs from April 26 to Nov. 9.

Guests can choose from five room types — double, twin, veranda rooms, family rooms or suites. Depending on when guests decide to escape to this mountain retreat, they will pay between ¥31,900 and ¥41,800 for a double room. Veranda rooms, providing unfiltered views of the surrounding nature, range from ¥46,200 to ¥62,700. Family rooms, tailored for four guests, start at ¥77,000. These nightly rates do not include service charges.

Reservations are required for kaiseki ryōri (traditional multicourse meal) or French dinners, and American or Japanese breakfasts that form separate accommodation and meal plans.

Kamikochi Imperial Hotel is about 75 minutes by bus from Shin-Shimashima Station. Private vehicles are not allowed in the vicinity, but the hotel’s luxury hires that pick up guests in Tokyo and take them to the hotel can be reserved at additional cost. An evening of sushi, bubbly and dance tunes

Lashings of Champagne from some of the world’s leading producers of the drink, award-winning sushi from two of Japan’s finest sushi restaurants and dance tunes courtesy of some of the country’s best DJs — it’s all happening at The St. Regis Osaka on Feb. 23 from 3 to 11 p.m.

The event caters to all budgets, with a la carte ticketing starting at ¥1,000 per glass and sushi (taxes and service charges included). VIP and free-flowing drink plans are also on offer as are vintage and prestige Champagnes. Of special interest is an on-site stamp rally that begs to ask, “Why should children have all the fun?” Attendees of this course can visit booths operated by different Champagne houses, or maisons, and collect stamps, with a free bottle of standard Champagne available at the finish. Over 15 brands of Champagne such as Bollinger, Billecart-Salmon and Beaumont des Crayeres, among others, make a fine accompaniment for sushi from two of Tokyo’s premiere sushi establishments: the Michelin-starred Sushi Yu and GQ Japan magazine’s “Restaurant of the Year 2019,” Sushi Zai.
