Grand Hyatt Fukuoka’s new chef

Since September, Ernst Jaeck has been the new executive chef at the Grand Hyatt Fukuoka in Canal City Hakata.

Jaeck has an extensive professional background. He started his career in his native Germany and has worked for hotels such as the Park Hyatt Sydney as the vice executive chef and the Grand Hyatt Bali as the executive chef, among other hotels around the world including in South Africa, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.

With this experience and knowledge of global cuisines, he and his culinary team are offering special dishes that take advantage of the rich, abundant produce in Fukuoka for customers to enjoy.

Wine event at Kobe Bay Sheraton

The Kobe Bay Sheraton Hotel and Towers on Rokko Island in Hyogo Prefecture will hold a wine tasting event in the hotel’s banquet hall on the third floor, from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 28.

Ticket costs ¥2,000 in advance and ¥3,000 at the door. Visitors can try around 300 kinds of wine from all over the world. Regular wines are free with admission, while fine wines are available starting at ¥500 per glass. Also, from ¥200, visitors can try tapas that go well with wine.

Other attractions include blind tasting contests and live music performances by pianist/organist Minoru Ozone, known as the father of jazz in Kobe, and his trio.

Visitors can purchase their favorite wines at a 20 percent discount and, if they wish, drink them in the hotel’s restaurants the same day.

InterContinental Christmas sweets

From Nov. 11, the InterContinental Yokohama Grand will start accepting orders for its Christmas desserts at the hotel’s handmade-pastry shop, The Patisserie.

Cakes for this year include the shop’s popular Christmas strawberry shortcake called La Symphonie de la Fraise (¥4,200, top photo) and the chocolate cake Chocolat Rouge (¥3,465) made using the Valrhona brand of French chocolate.

Also, other sweets for Christmas will be available, such as the hotel’s original stollen (¥1,260) and a box containing about 13 kinds of the hotel’s special European-style cookies (¥2,500).

The sweets can be picked up between Dec. 1 and 25 at the counter of The Patisserie.

Orders will be accepted over the phone or at the shop. The Patisserie opens daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
