1970s cakes get an Imperial encore

Since May, the Imperial Hotel Tokyo has been holding Sweets Oldies, a yearlong fair to celebrate the hotel shop Gargantua’s 40th anniversary by offering two kinds of retro cakes every two months.

For the remainder of this month, the cakes are a chocolate pie and a gateau noisettes (hazelnut cake), both originally sold in 1971.

The chocolate pie had been very popular for its rich chocolate flavors and flaky pie crust since the shop opened. The chocolate mixed with fresh cream and custard offers a smooth and refined taste. It is available at ¥525, including tax.

The gateau noisettes offers the rich fragrance of hazelnuts from hazelnut power and butter cream, with the sponge cake portion soaked in a cherry liqueur. It is also available at ¥525, including tax.

Also, at the hotel’s Rendez-Vous Lounge and Bar in the lobby, the cakes can be eaten as part of a set with coffee or tea at ¥1,890 including tax but subject to a service charge.

The Imperial Hotel Tokyo is a 3-minute walk from Hibiya or Uchisaiwaicho stations, and a 5-minute walk from Yurakucho or Ginza stations. For further information, call (03) 3539-8045 or visit www.imperialhotel.co.jp.
