The Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Chinzan-so will hold a monthlong “La Festa Italiana” of Italian cuisine, art and fashion, as an official event of “Italia in Giappone 2009,” the government promotion supported by the Embassy of Italy in Tokyo and the Italian State Tourist Board.

As part of the festival, the hotel’s Il Teatro restaurant will serve special menus featuring the cuisine of three Italian regions.

From Sept. 1 to 9, Il Teatro’s executive chef, Leonardo Di Clemente, will create original menus based on the cuisine of Apulia, his home region, with wines from the area.

From Sept. 10 to 16, menus will feature Tuscan foods related to the famous Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini.

From Sept. 17 to 30, Sebastiano Spriveri, executive chef of Il Teatro’s main restaurant in Milan, will be in Tokyo to present the latest flavors of the Italian city. There’s also a special Spriveri cooking school on Sept. 17 (¥18,000) and a gala dinner with opera on Sept. 18 (¥33,000).

During each period, a ¥7,000 lunch course will be available between 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. A dinner course, available between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., is ¥16,000 for the Apulia and Tuscan menus and ¥18,000 for the Milan menu.

Help to light up Christmas

The Keio Plaza Hotel in Shinjuku, Tokyo, is looking for people who want to participate in “Illumination Night.”

Illumination Night, on Nov. 16, is the hotel’s annual winter event, which displays Christmas motifs and other figures using guest-room lights.

Guests staying in 188 rooms on the west side of the hotel’s South Building will together create an artwork of lights on a 130-meter-high canvas (the hotel) by opening/closing the rooms’ curtains.

Entrants need to be in a group of more than two people and be able to check in by 6:30 p.m. The fee is ¥7,350 per person and participants can stay in the room after the event. Participants will be decided by drawing lots, but 60 rooms are available for the night on a first-come, first-served basis (¥10,500 with breakfast), which can be applied for through the Web site starting Sept. 7.

Dine with a geisha in Kyoto

The Hyatt Regency Kyoto has prepared a special dinner experience to display the traditional art and entertainment of geiko (geisha) and maiko (trainee geisha).

The hotel’s Japanese restaurant, Touzan, will host the two-hour dinner every Monday, except national holidays, for a limited period of three months, starting in September.

The exclusive meal makes it possible for guests to hear geiko and maiko sing, watch them dance, play traditional games with them and have a photo taken with them (guests will the photo as a complimentary gift).

An MC and interpreter will be on hand throughout, offering guests an introduction to the world of geiko and maiko and distributing a printed guide so that guests can understand this unique art form.

The Western-style special dinner course, using seasonal Kyoto ingredients, will be prepared by executive chef Shaun Keenan.

The price is ¥19,000 for adults and ¥15,000 for children aged 6-12, including drinks (sake, beer, wine, sparkling wine and soft drinks).
