Helping Africa to help itself
Systemic risks are factors that threaten not only individual countries themselves but also the whole global system. Africa is the scene of numerous systemic risks that must be overcome for the sake of both Africa's own development, and global security and prosperity. Infectious diseases like AIDS, disputes surrounding the distribution of natural resources, and the problems of heavily indebted countries can be cited as examples of systemic risks.

Catalyst for global stability
Asia's rapid economic growth, vast population and strategic geographical location are among the factors suggesting that the region should play a more prominent role in the international community. To cite but one example of Asia's influence on global issues, it is predicted that the rapid growth of energy use in Asia will make this region the source of nearly half of global greenhouse gas emissions by 2010.

Japan and the United Nations
On Dec. 18, 1956, Japanese Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu stood before the General Assembly of the United Nations to make a speech marking Japan's admission to the organization. In this address he stated that as the only nation to suffer the ordeal of atomic bombing, Japan hoped with all its heart that humanity would be able to escape this dreadful fate and free itself from the unbearable sense of fear that nuclear weapons engendered.
