Mister Donut stores on Tuesday removed “ryofu gayu” rice porridge from the menu after moth caterpillars were found in the dishes.
Duskin Co., which operates the chain, said it began marketing the dish Friday through its nationwide network of 1,131 Mister Donut shops.
The caterpillars were discovered in the porridge by shoppers or Mister Donut employees in one shop each in Chiba, Yamagata and Kochi prefectures.
Duskin said the caterpillars are harmless.
The larvae apparently found their way into the porridge from spinach that is also used in the dish, it said.
Duskin said the spinach must have been inadequately washed at a processing factory.
