The Ryukyu Golden Kings defeated the Toyama Grouses 86-77 in the decisive third game of their B. League playoff series in Okinawa on Monday, Kaz Nagatsuka reports in his roundup of the quarterfinal stage. The Kings, the lone Western Conference team still alive in the postseason, will host the Chiba Jets Funabashi in this weekend’s semifinal round.
The Jets beat the SeaHorses Mikawa 105-76 and 80-78 in their series in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture. Meanwhile, the first-seed Utsunomiya Brex opened their series against the Sunrockers Shibuya on Friday night and quickly wrapped it up on Saturday.
Another sweep, this one by the Kawasaki Brave Thunders over Osaka Evessa, may have lent some credence to star center Nick Fazekas’ earlier claim that his is “the team to beat” in the Eastern Conference.
In the event, Evessa was no match for Kawasaki’s depth, but Osaka veteran Ira Brown told Nagatsuka he’s satisfied with the “huge accomplishment” of making their first-ever B. League playoff appearance.
Before you settle down for the weekend’s semis, check out Nagatsuka’s postseason preview. Even with the field now whittled down by half, much of it remains relevant given that the teams filling out the top four places in the league survived the quarters.
