Japan's TOP museum sees the big picture
After being closed for two years for major renovations, Tokyo's best-known photography museum in Tokyo's fashionable Ebisu neighborhood reopened on Sept. 3, just in time to celebrate its 20-year anniversary. The venerable facility now boasts a new look, improved exhibition spaces and a new name in English: the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, or TOP Museum for short.

It's the end of the world as we know it, and we still feel fine
Hiroshi Sugimoto's "Lost Human Genetic Archive," the inaugural exhibition for the reopening of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (now the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum), is an erudite and elaborate exercise in gallows humor. The theme is the end of civilization and human life, but possibly also, and quite worryingly given the circumstances, the end of film photography.

'Collection Exhibition 2014: Spiritual World'
For this year's "Collection Exhibition," the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography reevaluates the relationship between Japanese religious culture and visual arts through a pilgrimage of photographs, videos and other works of the museum collection. In search of aspects of spirituality that have been lost to the modern world, works here date from the early 19th century to today, and include 168 photographs, about half of which are being exhibited to the public for the first time.

Now in its 56th year, the World Press Photo Contest has expanded its categories to include sports and portraiture to reflect those growing trends in photojournalism. The competition attracted more than 5,000 applicants, and the winning photos are currently on world tour, now making its stop in Tokyo.

Early photos of northern Japan capture a time of change
Although photography entered Japan in the mid-19th century, it took time to spread beyond the few port cities permitted to engage in trade with the West at that time. As a result, it was several decades before this imported Western technology reached outlying districts, and by then the Japanese concept of photography had broadened considerably. This shift can be seen in an important exhibition, "Dawn of Japanese Photography: Hokkaido and Tohoku," at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

In 1943, in the midst of World War II, a U.S. Army propaganda drop over Berlin distributed leaflets bearing gruesome images of Adolf Hitler's face partially obscured by a calf's skull.
