'Remember': Some things can never be forgotten
The 2000s have not been kind to filmmaker Atom Egoyan, once hailed as a visionary who could do no wrong (particularly at the Cannes Film Festivals of the mid-1990s). Egoyan's career took an unexpected downward turn once the millennium kicked it, and from there on it's been a slippery slope. Try as he might, he just can't seem to get film buffs to adore him again, and his last two films, "The Devil's Knot" and "The Captive," have had (mainly Western) critics sighing loudly and rolling their eyes — virtually, of course.

Kyoto Experiment festival revels in breaking barriers
"Good fences make good neighbors" is an often-quoted line from Robert Frost's poem "Mending Wall" about two farmers united in their effort to rebuild a wall that divides their land. Less well known is the poem's central query: "Why do good fences make good neighbors?" It's a question that seems particularly relevant in today's world, and it's at the heart of the Kyoto Experiment festival running through Nov. 13.

Japan's meek media kowtows to the government
Last week I compared the Catholic Church in Boston and Japan's "nuclear village" of atomic-power advocates — two powerful institutions that stifled embarrassing revelations for some time. The Oscar-winning film "Spotlight" depicts the comeuppance of the church hierarchy after investigative reporters from The Boston Globe broke the story about pedophile priests in 2002, including how the church chose to reassign them to other unsuspecting dioceses where they continued to prey on children.

'The Eichmann Show': The reality is far more horrific than the fiction
Like many things, journalism used to have a gravitas that has all but disappeared from today's media. That point is brought home in "The Eichmann Show," a BBC film about what is deemed the first globally broadcast televised documentary.

Apocalypse Now: tighter, cleaner and just as disturbing
Perhaps it's no surprise that as Donald Trump incites campaign rallies with his promise to torture more bad guys, along comes Col. Kurtz to remind us of "the horror, the horror" — his radical notion that the only way to defeat savagery is by becoming a savage.

'Sherlock: The Abominable Bride' leaps off the BBC and into cinemas across Japan
Red alert to Sherlockians. You have likely been suffering from withdrawals after the cliffhanger finale to the BBC series "Sherlock," which left us on a veritable desert island without murder mysteries or the comforting presence of Martin Freeman as John Watson and — worst of all — no Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock himself. But a quick fix is on the way. "The Abominable Bride," a New Year's Day TV special that aired on the BBC last month, will hit cinemas across Japan tomorrow. Let us simply be thankful for the fact that we're getting to see this so soon (because you know, desert island) and on a big screen that enables everyone to collectively bask in the glorious snobbishness of the "Sherlock" series.

A golden year for aging stars in film
A while back we heard that 50 is the new 30, but Hollywood has gone beyond that, as a whole new reserve corps of talent is emerging to tell us that 70 is the new 35, and that at 60 you're a mere baby.

Too early to forecast greatness for young gun Alli
Young players tend not to make significant impressions at international finals. There are exceptions, of course, notably Pele (1958 World Cup), Frank Beckenbauer (1966 World Cup) and Michael Owen (1998 World Cup), but generally football's top table is for the tried and trusted.
