Wabi lies at the heart of Japanese history
You could spend your entire life in modern Japan without ever hearing the term wabi, though no overview of Japanese history or art is complete without it. It's a beautiful word, hard to define like most beautiful words. Poverty is the heart of it, which sounds dispiriting, but there's the Zen phrase "To fill a monk's tattered robe with a cool refreshing breeze," quoted by Zen master Daisetz T. Suzuki (1870-1966) as an invitation to see poverty through Zen eyes.

Public questions Japan's duck and cover drills
On July 7, during a public assembly in Takahama, Fukui Prefecture, Shunichi Tanaka, head of Japan's Nuclear Regulation Authority, was asked how his organization would respond to a North Korean missile attack. Tanaka replied that it would make more sense for North Korea to hit Tokyo with a missile than "drop it on a small (nuclear) reactor." Though meant as a joke, the comment was condemned by many, including the environmental minister, who is basically Tanaka's boss. Tanaka apologized.

Tsukiji: Still a fish in troubled waters
Director Naotaro Endo first started filming "Tsukiji Wonderland" in 2014, and it had been partly intended as a farewell to Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market, which faces a makeover and move after serving sellers and buyers for 80 years. When the film was made, the market was slated to move to Toyosu on Nov. 7, 2016.

The 'informel' whirlwind that swept across Japan
Taro Okamoto's "Men Aflame" (1955) is a swirling fusion of figuration, surrealism and abstraction. The content addresses the irradiation of Japanese sailors onboard the Dai-go Fukuryu-maru by fallout from American nuclear testing on Bikini Atoll. The painting is part of the 1950s Japanese art movement known as "reportage." It was serious art — politically engaged, socially conscious and outraged.

'Miss Doc' shows the struggles of a lone female doctor in rural Japan
Change comes slowly to the Japanese film industry. The hagiographic biopic about a doctor, scientist or similarly distinguished personage — rarely seen in Hollywood since the days of Jack L. Warner and Louis B. Mayer — is still alive and well here.

No reservations about eating in Tokyo
We arrive a little before the soba shop opens and wait in the rain. A waitress slides the door to one side and hangs up a noren, a traditional curtain used to indicate that a shop is open. She looks at us — two Americans — and says in Japanese that the restaurant is a member's only shop and that we would not be able to dine there.

The new face of Japanese beauty products
A wise woman once said that beauty is pain, but that doesn’t mean that it has to be boring. With designer face masks, even the simple act of skin moisturizing can become fun.

Seeing beyond Jiro Takamatsu's shadows
"Jiro Takamatsu: Trajectory of Work" is taxonomic, breaking down everything in the artist's oeuvre into relatively neat successions of projects and including his paintings and sculptures, copious sketches and the marginalia. Even the catalog seemingly calls for a scientific approach, this exhibition being the opportunity to "conduct objective and detailed research and analysis."

Jiro Oyamada's dark side exposes his highlights
When it comes to selecting "tortured artists" — those driven to create from the deep wells of their souls by immense suffering — the 20th-century Japanese painter Jiro Oyamada must seem like a shoo-in. The Fuchu Art Museum, in the western suburbs of Tokyo, is now celebrating the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth because he had a close connection to the area before his mysterious disappearance in 1971.

There's method in artistic 'madness'
Jiro Takamatsu is not easy to understand. He was an idiosyncratic avant-garde artist who worked with a variety of materials to create arcane art that expressed philosophical ideas. This is immediately off-putting to some and intriguing to others. However, the exhibition "Takamatsu Jiro: Mysteries" at the Museum of Modern Art Tokyo is designed so that most visitors will be able to find something to take from it.
