Two brothers competing on Japan's political ladder
One of the major topics of speculation among political observers nowadays is what course of action former internal affairs minister Kunio Hatoyama will take following his revolt against Prime Minister Taro Aso. He will have to make up his mind soon now that the date of the next general election has just been set for the end of August.

United front against North Korea
Prime Minister Taro Aso and South Korean President Lee Myung Bak agreed in their Sunday meeting in Tokyo that North Korea's nuclear and missile development programs pose a grave threat, and that Japan, South Korea and the United States must closely cooperate to counter it. The two leaders also agreed that the international community cannot accept North Korea as a nuclear power and should make the insular nation realize that it will pay a high price for its provocative acts.

Paying Aso back with praise
Ranking officials at the Foreign Ministry appear more preoccupied with presenting Prime Minister Taro Aso as dexterous at diplomacy than promoting the national interest. One official has confided that it is now their turn to return the favor given to them when Aso was foreign minister.

Japan looks beyond tourism's 'Golden Route'
In 2001, soon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S., a friend working at a Tokyo travel agency griped about how terrorism affected his business, saying that tourism, after all, is a "peace industry."

Civility penalizes Japan's refs
My first reaction on hearing that a Japanese alliance of sports associations would hold a study weekend on international refereeing was that it was "too little — too late."

Japan's culture policy lingers in limbo
It's a fact that has long puzzled devotees and plain old tourists alike. Japan's manga and anime arts have been wowing the world for more than a decade, and yet the national government still hasn't got around to setting up a proper museum for their enjoyment, preservation and study.

One-sided view of military burden
Your April 15 editorial "Funding for U.S. military facilities" is, unfortunately, consistent with a trend that's fairly prevalent in the Japanese media -- the one-sided theme of the "burden" borne by Japan for hosting U.S. military facilities. In this editorial the burden was financial, in others it dwells on the myth of disproportionate crime, noise, etc.

Keep out torch-protection unit
Recently I saw video footage of members of the Chinese government's Olympic Games Sacred Flame Protection Unit -- reportedly from the same paramilitary People's Armed Police that crush protesters in Beijing and Tibet -- roughing up Britons in Britain and Frenchmen in France. It is odd that the Olympic torch is considered more "sacred" than the citizens of other countries (including legendary athletes like Sebastian Coe) on their own soil. As a Christian who believes that individual life is a sacred gift, I pray for people of all faiths, as well as those of no faith, to be less afraid of, and readier to love, one another.

BOJ finds itself in 'unpresidented' state
The divided Diet has left the Bank of Japan with a vacant seat at the top for the first time since the war. This came about after Toshihiko Fukui's five-year term ended in mid-March and the government's nominees to succeed him were vetoed.

Basics of the U.S. military presence
The issue of U.S. military forces in Japan has come to the fore again following the alleged rape of a 14-year-old Okinawan girl by a U.S. Marine. Although the girl has withdrawn the accusation, locals and politicians have seized on the incident — a reminder of the 1995 gang rape of a 12-year-old girl by two marines and a navy corpsman — to compel a rethink of the presence of U.S. forces in Japan.
