Only one of Suntory's two craft beer offerings manages to capture that small brewer vibe
Suntory's new Craft Select series isn't craft beer. It's not from a charming neighborhood brewery, but a beverage conglomerate that bought up Jim Beam.

Spring Valley Brewery allows for a glance at its signature suds
When it comes to handing out this year's gongs and plaudits for the best setting and most notable architecture, there are going to be very few restaurants that will rival Spring Valley Brewery. That's because it occupies pride of place at Log Road Daikanyama.

Japan's craft beer mug runneth over
Tatsuo Aoki's low-key Tokyo bar, Popeye, has become a destination for beer fanatics from around the country. They make the pilgrimage to sample Hokkaido ales and Shizuoka stouts, or for an impromptu lecture from Aoki on hops and yeast.

Magical Animal may have crafted Tokyo's best pulled pork sandwich
Everyone loves food trucks and al fresco snacking — especially now that the weather is warming up. There's nowhere better in the city to combine the two than Commune 246 in Omotesando. This colorful encampment of cafes and food stalls opened last December as the successor to the much-loved 246 Common.

Documentary on Japanese 'war brides' is gaining steam
The documentary-film scene just keeps getting better, and here's one recent example that strikes a chord. Three women (Kathryn Tolbert, Lucy Craft and Karen Kasmauski) — all first-born daughters of Japanese war brides who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s to wed Americans — have gotten together to make "Fall Seven Times, Get Up Eight," a 20-minute documentary about an overlooked slice of life in America's history.

Monkey ski, monkey brew as Shiga Kogen hosts annual beer-and-bands festival
Two of the bigger booms of the last few years in Japan seem like they would be a great match. But nobody thought to merge the worlds of craft beer and music festivals until Eigo Sato did so in 2012.

Craft Beer Base brews niche following
Osaka has been going through a minor boom in craft beer bars over the past few years. This is undoubtedly good news for drinkers who want more than what's on offer from the big four brewers of Asahi, Kirin, Sapporo and Suntory.

Pirouette, Craft Beer Market and more: some great new openings in Tokyo in 2014
The festive season is upon us, and 2015 beckons. But before we move on, herded into the Year of the Sheep, it's time to pause, celebrate and give thanks for the abundance of fine eating over the past 12 months.

Drunk Bat: Attune your sonar to this cozy craft-beer bar
Admittedly, the only reason craft-beer bar Drunk Bat in Mitaka caught my attention was because of its name. For English-speakers, it comes off as amusing; for Japanese speakers with only a few years of compulsory English education under their belt, it can be misheard as "Drug Bad," which leads to some serious misunderstandings.

Craft beer on tap couldn't be simpler
Opened last month, Pump is the newest addition to Tokyo's continuously expanding craft-beer scene. The interior is clean and simplistic with unadorned concrete walls, spotless counters and tables and a stainless-steel wall behind the bar counter.

Explore the many flavors of Belgian beer
While people comment on the increasing number of small-scale breweries and craft-beer bars in Japan, I can't help but notice that Belgian beer is also gaining a lot of attention — albeit on a lesser scale.

Bakka: Neapolitan-style pizza al fresco in the heart of Shibuya
Al fresco pizza and beer. It doesn't get much better than this in the middle of Shibuya. Who cares if your seat is a hard, narrow trestle, the view is an inner-city abandoned lot and the pies are served on flimsy paper plates from the back of a converted delivery van? You don't come to Bakka for home comforts. You're here because this is some of the best street food in the city.

Bowing out with a San Diego favorite — fish tacos
As a native of southern California, I have long lamented the dearth of good Mexican food in Japan. It's too heavy to take off here, people say. To which I have to wonder, then why not fish tacos?

Brewed in Japan: The Evolution of the Japanese Beer Industry
Newly in paperback, history professor Jeffrey W. Alexander's 2013 book charts the rise of beer in Japan, from early Dutch influence and the barrels brought by Matthew Perry in 1854 (described by the Japanese as "bitter horse-piss wine" — well, it was American beer) to today's craft boom.

Not ducking tradition in Higashi-Ueno
With its lotus-laden Shinobazu pond, park grounds, and national museums, the Ueno area in Tokyo draws millions of visitors a year. Nearby Higashi-Ueno (Eastern Ueno), however, seems to be another world altogether. When I exit Shin-Okachimachi station, under skies portending summer heat, this low-lying area seems half asleep.

A golden time to dine outdoors
Now is the golden season in Tokyo: balmy days, mellow temperatures, low humidity and no mosquitoes. There's nothing better than a nice, leisurely (and maybe even boozy) lunch outside — dinner, too, as long as you bring a warm jacket or throw.

The Corner: Great burgers at any angle
The Corner is a tiny little nook of a place that has been running since 2011 and (although this may be contested by some) serves the best burger in town. A "New York-style bar," The Corner is keen to put the gourmet into burger making, as every patty is handmade and every bun spread with a unique secret sauce.
