Japanese fans are snatching up travel agencies’ MLB World Series tour packages for a rare chance to watch Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Los Angeles Dodgers play ball in person.
Travel agencies are having a hard time keeping up with the intense demand for travel packages for the World Series that include flights, hotels, game tickets, and stadium tours, thanks to so-called “Ohtanimania.”
“As Ohtani continues to perform well, so do our MLB-related sales,” said Nana Shibasaki, a representative for JALPAK, a tour operator under the Japan Airlines group.
JTB, Japan’s largest travel agency, has seen an even more intense surge in interest in MLB packages, receiving over five times the number of inquiries about the World Series than anticipated, according to JTB spokesperson Ai Otsuka.
“The World Series became one of our most popular tours almost instantly. Customers are ecstatic,” said Kyoko Naito, a representative from travel agency Amnet. The company received more than twice the number of applications than available slots for the MLB tour.
One of their World Series packages, which includes tickets for two games, goes for ¥1.06 million including fuel charges.
“It’s all thanks to the hard work and popularity of Japanese players like Ohtani and Yamamoto,” she added.
With a 16-hour time difference, Game 1 of the World Series at Dodger Stadium will air Saturday morning Japan Time, with Game 2 on Sunday morning.
Popular anime series “One Piece” was forced to push back the start of its new season — originally set for Sunday — because Fuji TV plans to broadcast the World Series live in the same time frame.
Expectations are centered on Ohtani, the leading candidate for the National League MVP, and pitcher Yamamoto — both of whom joined the Dodgers last winter with one of the largest free-agent deals, fueling a surge of enthusiasm back home.
When Yamamoto faced off against fellow Japanese star Yu Darvish in Game 5 of the National League Division Series on Oct. 11, it became Japan’s most-watched MLB playoff game, drawing an estimated average 12.9 million viewers, according to MLB. With the World Series set to feature two iconic franchises, the Dodgers and New York Yankees, interest is poised to surge even higher.
Ahead of the series opener on Thursday, Ohtani expressed hope that many fans will cheer him on.
“I’m hoping that a lot of people watch the game,” Ohtani said. “I’m looking forward to the cheers and enthusiasm of fans. Hopefully, I can use that to add more power to my performance.”
