Due to how the calendar falls in 2024, the first meet this year begins a full two weeks into January.
Compared to 2023, when the hatsu basho began on Jan. 8, wrestlers, as well as Japan Sumo Association staff, have an additional six days after the traditional year-end celebrations in which to prepare.
