It's time to wise up to academic art

For too long the fine academic art of the 19th-century has lingered in the shadow of the Impressionist movement. The French Academy, with its rules and standards, has often been cast as the villain in the story of the period, standing in opposition to the 'heroic' Impressionists in their quest for 'artistic freedom.'

Balthus' renaissance of Realism

Paris-born Balthus Klossowski de Rola (1908-2001) is considered by some to be comparable to Picasso, though it was Picasso who said that Balthus was the 'last great painter of the 20th century.' From Picasso's Cubism onward, painting no longer needed to mirror the world 'as seen.' Balthus, by contrast, was a classic Realist with an occasional Surrealist twinge.

Manic Sheep, Wedance represent overseas indie at Fuji Rock Festival

Since 2001, Fuji Rock's Rookie a Go-Go stage has spotlighted indie talents not quite ready for the festival's larger areas. Acts apply to play — this year 1,300 bands vied for 15 slots — and with the exception of Taiwan's Go Chic in 2010, all the past performers have been locals. But this summer...

Godzilla

The old Godzilla movies made by Japan's Toho studio between 1954 and 2004 were B-grade monster movies. They were cheesy and primitive, for the most part, but displayed the charm of inventive filmmakers who were trying to transcend the limitations of budget and technology by having a guy in a rubber lizard...

Well, however you visualize the hero of Shakespeare's longest...

Indelible blot on history

The downing of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 has gone from accident to catastrophe to horror. And, by most accounts so far, it has exposed the quickening of the civil conflict in eastern Ukraine as a geostrategic blunder by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Koichi Tagawa’s diary entry from Aug. 9, 1945, describes the day of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.
