The Japan Times regrettably has misrepresented my Jan. 22 letter, "Kick-start a new whaling agenda." The relevant passage in my original letter read: "Tokyo should therefore overturn its stance on whaling, including a resumption of commercial-scale harvesting, to kick-start a new agenda on food security."

The letters editor changed it to read: "Therefore, Tokyo should resume commercial-scale harvesting to kick-start a new agenda on food security."

Let's clear things up. I do not support Japan's stated position on resuming commercial-scale whaling. I would like to see Japan give up ALL whaling to reach a new consensus on sustainability and food security with trading partners.

The opinions expressed in this letter to the editor are the writer's own and do not necessarily reflect the policies of The Japan Times.
