The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is working to put into practical use commuting by ferry for residents of waterfront areas in the capital.

After conducting two pilot programs in recent years, the metropolitan government aims to launch commuter ferry operations in the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2024, by creating a subsidy system to encourage self-sustaining operations by service providers.

Taking a cue from changes in lifestyles brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tokyo government hopes to promote the wider use of ferries as a new means of commuting and make waterfront areas more lively, officials said.
