Mitsubishi Motors Corp. was told Tuesday it will be allowed to continue making four minicars at the center of a mileage scandal, despite tests showing fuel economy for the models was on average 11 percent worse than advertised.

The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry said it had decided not to cancel the models' type certificates — the approval needed to sell the vehicles — after it deemed them safe.

Instead, the ministry plans to reprimand the automaker, sources said.
